On our recent podcast #6, we talked about the summer of 1979 and trying to qualify for the 1980 Olympic trails marathon. You had to run under 2:21:56 to qualify. Beards had run 2:21:54 in Canada earlier that summer, so I was super motivated to get my qualifying time. I was able to run 2:20:31 at the first Black Hills Marathon in Rapid City, SD. Top photo is coming into Rapid City around the 15 mile mark. I barely remember the finish as I was bonking pretty good the last 2 miles of the race. Oh, to be 22 and that fit again!
