After 3 years of frustration of not being healthy for spring track, I was able to make it through the 1979 season without any setbacks. I ran the Howard Wood College division 1500 meters and came away with a win. My time of 3:54.1 was my fastest by far. As I described on our podcast, my splits were: 61, 65, 66 and then final 300 in 42 seconds (56 pace). This is a photo someone gave me as the field comes up to the bell lap. Virgil Tjeerdsma's brother Joe is the runner in 4th place right behind me. I'm not sure who the leader from USD is. Anyone know? One week later I ran 30:29 10,000 meters at the NCC conference meet, finishing 2nd behind Rob Kinnunen (30:22) from USD. Lower photo is the 1979 SDSU track team that was the North Central Conference champions that year.
